A dark drama well portrayed
Verified purchase
I think those who have reviewed it without delight perhaps do not know this is a genuine Victorian story, not a modern historical drama. The powerful father who disinherits, cowed dependent children, the ruin of young women by higher class young men, revenge by the lower class, and the male dificulty with restraining desire, were all live issues at the time.
I liked it as the genuine Gothic period piece it is. The heroine's face was too modern (too strong boned), the women move too forcefully, and there was a lack of servants to be seen but all that is standard in modern films set in history.
The plot was well displayed and not predictable. Who was the nice heroine? Mystery unsolved! Maybe I missed that.
Costumes and context were unusually good. Landscape ditto.
A dark drama not intended to be pretty but often it was beautiful. As a romantic I'd have liked a kiss or held hands at the end.

My solicitor recommends I seek compensation

To be fair, as an Amazon Prime customer the film was free to me, but my solicitor recommends I seek compensation for my lost time and brain cells. A story, that in the right hands could have been a bit more tolerable if someone with a shred of intelligence got rid of the cheesy coincidences littered within the story (how opportunistic that both lead male characters just happen to show up at the lead females house at the precise moment she is giving birth, the stars truly must have been aligned). The cast all look bored throughout the entire film, the accents are laughable, the cheesy 'special' effects (I seriously laughed and went back several times to see the glorious squirt of fake blood from a bottle in the fight scene) look like a 1970's sci-fi movie. Just terrible. For the sake of your brain do not waste it on this.

Made for TV with a budget and script to match.

Very disappointing. The script suffers from extreme tell-a-life-story-in-two-scenes-itus leaving any tension or drama on the cutting room floor. Slater and Leto, who can normally make the best of bad writing, appear wooden and passionless. And Claire Forlani, who requires the intense drama of CSI to evoke any feeling, is preposterous as the love interest. One cannot believe she would tempt Leto to risk tuppence let alone his entire fortune, family and lifestyle. Not even the mighty weight of Derek Jacobi can make his character convincing. There is no mystery and no intrigue, which leaves the viewer with no care for what happens next. Dreary mood lighting supposedly meant to make the film dark, merely lends credence to the assumption that a minimal budget meant they couldn't afford professional lighting. With so many other excellent period dramas available, it is little wonder this movie ended up in the bargain bin.

This was Basil and John Mannion's film

The romance took a huge backseat, it is a small part of the movie yet it is marketed as a romance film, with its poster and the description. It leaves the type of audience member it attracts disappointed when they finally finish the movie.

I am confused about the bad reviews. Loved the film, the actors were great and the story was very engaging.

do not waste your time watching this awful film

Where can we begin writing this more entertaining than the time we spent hoping the film would improve... it didn't. All we (an audience of two costume drama fans) could give one star to were the costumes and basil's eyes. The acting, script and general unbelievably bad story were not worthy of one star. Well maybe Derek Jacobi but he must have been so strapped for cash to appear in this disaster.

Purchased for a big Jared Leto fan. They were happy with it, and as it was a good price, I can't complain either :) the delivery was fast, but the DVD case was a bit broken in places. Just replaced the case and it was fine :)

Just... no.

Unless you're a huge fan of Leto and/or Slater, don't bother with it. It's quite dull, the effects are hilariously bad, and the characters and storyline rather abysmal.
