Good, but not a classic

I bought this because I am a great fan of the original Ghost in the Shell movie and I noted that this was based on a Manga by Shiro Masamune. First, let me say that the animation is superb with the equipment and scenery exceptionally well imagined and rendered. The thing that lets the film down are the numerous breaks in the action where one or other of the characters explains the science/back history. The explanations are needed because, I think, the storyteller is trying to hit too many targets namely 1. if you do away with hate, you do away with love 2. Keep the military under close control 3. Don't entrust your society's fate to an unelected individual/elite 4. if all else fails, make sure you have a kick-ass girl around to sort it all out. I can't help feeling that a better filmmaker would have found some way of simplifying the story to fit in with the shortened timescale of a film. That being said, once you have absorbed all the explanations, the story makes sense.

Ah Dang: Dubtitles

Most people watching this will probably be puzzled by what's going on, that's mainly because you are suppossed to read the Manga it's based on. Well if you don't want to do that you could listen to the great commentary which will fill you in on some of the Backstory and characters to better understand the story.

The story is set after WW3 where nukes were not used but the Planet was still devastated by war, after this a Mega City called Olympus was built and was deemed the perfect city to live in and was managed by Bioroids. But some people don't like the idea of Bioroids in control and thus terrorists attack the city, up to stop them are SWAT members Deunan and here cyborg partner Briareos. Now they must stop the terrorist's before they try to destroy the city.

The video and sound are great but I think the English dub has far too many swear words in the second half of the anime and the subtitles are actually dubtitles which is really a bother for those who want to watch it's Original Japanese Language.

Extras:
Manga Trailer (Shadow Skill)
Video of Images
Commentary with Jonathan Clements and Larissa Murray (voice of Deunan)

Impressive telling of a SF Military story

Way back my son had a manga collection some of which I used to borrow (for parental supervisory purposes). So remembering how well crafted some were and hearing good things about Appleseed I decided it was time to broaden the horizons.
I know this is 'relatively' old but nonetheless the combination of CGI and 'traditional' animation is stunning to my old eyes. Combined with an intelligent narrative this was a captivating watch.
The whole Appleseed world is worth a visit even if the continuity jars a bit.
Recommended for anyone who likes animation but has not yet visited this particular genre. Also well worth a look if you are into all things SF

What a great Anime film.

I remember seeing the original Appleseed film and loving it when I was in high school, even though the original was only on for an hour. Well I have to say this new version is fantastic. The new CG artwork is amazing and will completely blow your mind if your new to this type of animation, or even if your already a Manga fan you will love this. Quite along film as well which is great and that makes it worth the money.

Buy the way, make sure you buy this on Blu-ray as its worth seeing the HD artwork detail in full. Also you can select in the main menu for the English version, as it comes as standard as a German Blu-ray language DVD. Very easy to change the language.

Animation of the highest quality. (Still).

Visually amazing. I watched this because its made by the Ghost in a Shell people and would say this is a worthy follow up. The 3D style animation is unlike anything else i've ever seen. Even the manga style faces resonate a strange 3D human beauty. Why have'nt more films been made in this vein? Maybe because the time and effort required to make this is simply too much for a relatively under-appreciated art form. Also, if you are going to go to so much effort it may as well be for a good story, which may explain why sequels of this type of film are always of a much poorer standard. Thankfully this has a well told, original story. The music and some of the fight scenes are a bit cheesy, but don't dominate the film. It'll take the 1hr 45 running time just to get over how good the graphics are. Well worth the millions of hours it must've taken to make.

Good animated action flick

I haven't seen any of the other versions of Appleseed, so I can't compare this to them. As a result one or two small parts of the film didn't seem to be fully explained.

Otherwise I thought it was a good film, there's even a twist. The visuals are good too. Although I'm not sure if this would be suitable for people that don't like computer animated films. Also at ~100min running time you should be able to tell this isn't some half-baked film.

I've yet to watch the entire film with Japanese audio and English subs, but from what I saw at the beginning I think the translation is a bit too literal and ended up watching the rest of the film with the dubbed English audio.

If you're looking for the limited editon this isn't it, but the box still comes with the 2 discs.

ok so then its another vision of post apocalyptic future and now mankind has designed bioroids to help govern themselves
into this comes the heroin deunan to try and save the day
the good- the visuals are mind blowing the plot is quite inventive and the mixture of philosophic musings to action thankfully falls more into the action camp
the bad - thankfully very little it slows down a little in the middle to crowbar some stuff about mans existence into the characters and as such it loses some momentum but that minor slip aside it flows brilliantly and looks truly stunning
