The Apartment

8.32 h 5 min1960X-RayPG
This award-winning film is a sex comedy but it also lifts the lid on the brutality of the American office. To curry favour, CC Baxter lets his office execs use his flat for dalliances. When his callous boss dumps the lift girl, whom Baxter loves from afar, he saves her from suicide, and realises what a fool he's been.

Buyer Beware - Very Poor Quality Version
Verified purchase
This film is one my all-time favourites. I've seen it many times via TV and DVD, and opted to have my own digital copy to view via Amazon Prime.

Sadly, this is unwatchable. The quality is so poor that the whole film is in constant shadow. Even clips on You Tube are far better quality. I tried it on more than one device and the result was the same.

Moreover, once purchased and clicked on, there is no way whatsoever to return it or complain.

It's completely put me off buying films via Prime downloads.

If you love this movie and you're looking forward to viewing it again, you'll have to go back to your DVD - or do as I did and waste your money with no refund possible.

Wrong aspect ratio
Verified purchase
I really love this movie and was thrilled to get it on prime to watch via my mobile. Unfortunately there was no trailer to judge the quality of picture etc. and after i had purchased it realised the film ratio was wrong ie. should have been 235:1 not 185: 1 which loses approx 40% pf the picture.
Apart from this lack of info pre purchase this is a great black and white movie to watch.

Wrong aspect ratio = spoiled viewing experience. Terrific film, though.

This is tough. The movie is five stars, no question, an absolute classic of cinema.

The presentation of the Prime Video, a zoomed 1.85:1 aspect ratio when the original feature was 2.35:1, is very disappointing and wasn't advertised anywhere before I purchased it.

Not sure what the rationale for this is, but it ruins Billy Wilder's original vision and scope. Still a wonderful film, just large chunks of it missing from the screen on this version.

Deserving, multi Oscar winner

Not great quality in SD: very high contrast (possibly deliberate on the part of the original print makers), but it didn't detract from this deserving, multi Oscar winner. Both Lemmon and MacLaine excel, acting-wise.

Great movie, classic.

Classic movie with Jack and the gorgeous Shirley at their best.
Seems a bit sexist, but that's the era. It does poke fun at the characters using the apartment to cheat on their wives though.

Office politics. Broken dreams.
A classic with stellar performances
from Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacClaine.

They REALLY dont make 'em like this anymore.

Before Mad Men, there was The Apartment 🎄
Verified purchase
A simultaniously funny and cynical depiction of the shallow glamour and chauvinistic corruption of the mid-20th century workplace.

Without The Apartment, there is no Mad Men. 'Peggy Olsen's name in Mad Men, must be a nod to Mr. Sheldrake's PA, Miss Olsen. I don't know if there are any other direct references like this though 🤔
