Badly needs subtitles.

I have watched it right through. As a non-American (I am English) , I cannot understand some of the dialogue. The film really needs subtitles (captions). And of course for the deaf community, subtitles are vital.
I always check at the start of any Amazon films if they have subtitles. Very often I don't watch.

Do The Hustle!

Great entertainment. This is film that walks a little way behind films such as 'Casino' and 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'. It is not quite as good, or have the as clever a story line, as either and doesn't have the disturbing but essential while compelling violence as the the first or engrossing over the top style of the latter but it does contain the remarkable screen presence of all the main players including just the right percentage of OTT characterisation to make viewing compulsive. It is also a tale which keeps you guessing about who is fooling who and who is going to come out of this worse.

The story keeps the viewers interest for 2hrs and 15 minutes but the film is made by the superb performances and the recaptured 70s, sexy, style and a story that make it recommended viewing.

Engaging most of the time but a little long

A very interesting movie based on a true story though I don't know by how much. The acting was excellent except for some of the minor characters. The character of the FBI agent was a little over the top and unrealistic considering it is based on a true story but I imagine they were looking for comedy value. The story is a little bit convoluted so you have to follow it closely - I didn't, as I watched late at night.
The FBI agent's supervisor recants a childhood story that has zero bearing on the film story. The director could have cut all that nonsense out.

The film has certainly got an all-star line up fronted by 'Christian Bale' and 'Bradley
Talented Con-artist 'Irving Rosenfeld' and his equally talented partner 'Sydney Prosser'
rather than go to jail are forced by ambitious F.B.I agent 'Ritchie Dimaso' to help him
expose some high-rollers in the hustle-business in the shape of 'New Jersey' power-
broker 'Mayor Carmine Polito' who's dealings include the Mafia and many leading
political figures.
The situation the two hustlers are walking into appears to be way over their heads with
a high-risk scenario, these guys do not play games.
'Sydney' initially knew very little about 'Irving's' wife 'Rosalyn' or the existence of his
young son.
'Rosalyn' isn't always predictable and could easily blow the op' wide open, putting 'Ritchie'
'Sydney' and her husband in danger (a woman's scorn)
The film is for long periods pretty slow-moving, because of it's acclaim you are expecting
it to suddenly take-off.
'Jennifer Lawrence' won best supporting actress for her role as 'Rosalyn' (rather she'd won
her Oscar for 'Hunger Games')
'Christian Bale' plays 'Irving' 'Bradley Cooper' F.B.I agent 'Ritchie' and 'Amy Adams' plays
The film based loosely on one or two real events is set in the 70's for which there is one or
two mainly great 70's sounds to enjoy along the way.
Special Features :-
* The making of 'American Hustle'
* Deleted and Extended Scenes.

I downloaded this on Prime Video. It was made in 2013 and there are no subtitles! This really is unacceptable in this day and age, and accounts for the low star rating.

Conned, American Style

Based on a tale of a con man (Bale) together with his seductive partner (Adams) forced to work for an FBI agent (Cooper). Add another couple of 'con artists' and you have the American Hustle.
On paper this sounds promising but in reality it is trying to be too clever. I found it too long and complicated and did not care what was going on by the end. The best moments were the heated exchanges between the main characters. It may make sense second time round but glad I did not pay to watch it at the cinema.

The story-line was okay but could have done with less emotional garbage and relationship hassles and more slick hustling

The soundtrack was indeed a marvel to behold! The story-line was okay but could have done with less emotional garbage and relationship hassles and more slick hustling. Intelligent and clever twists and turns would be better. Christian Bale's character was excellent proving his ability to play diverse roles. Jennifer Lawrence is so beautiful she could do anything but the constant use of the 'F' word was a unnecessary addition. Swearing and cursing is I always feel a defamatory use of the English language particularly so when we have a wealth of other words to use. Directors and script writers should learn to use other sources of impact instead of cursing being the climax of a scene. Bradley Cooper was fantastic and always brings a creative energy to his roles as he did in Limitless. Amy Adams was excellent but I would like Hollywood to make a new version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with her as the lead role that would be brilliant!!! Overall I enjoyed the film but I think script writers can do better particularly with such acclaimed actors and actresses.
