I bought this because I have enjoyed all the films/TV shows that Mary Elizabeth Winstead has appeared in and, in truth, she was the best part of this film. That being said, she plays a stand-up comedienne who has moved to LA to escape a possessive boyfriend. From the bits we saw she is not an especially funny comedienne (she relies on embarrassment laughs, by talking about female genitalia etc.). She meets Common and they commence an affair. I think Common must have upped his Valium dose, because he turned in a lifeless performance which rendered the affair unbelievable. He should have given a couple of his Valium to Sonoya Mizuno, who turned up during one of the stars dates and did a crazy ex-girlfriend act which was thrown in for no apparent reason and was never seen again. Suffice it to say, that our heroine has a meltdown during her big break broadcast show where family secrets come out. The film pretty much ends there. The actors, for the most part, made the best of a poor script and the directing could have done with tightening up. The storyline was OK and with a better script and direction would have made for an interesting snapshot of a traumatic part of someone's life where they face up to an historic wrong. With that in mind, it would have been interesting to have seen a bit more of how Nina dealt with the aftermath of her meltdown. Could have been so much better.

Surprisingly moving movie

This is a movie about a tough and talented woman struggling to make the big time as a stand-up comedian. The film is not at all what I expected, in the best possible way. Superlative performance by Common, but more especially by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whose acting talent is properly unleashed in a more serious movie like this. Full marks.

Good movie, female driven bringing up things not usually addressed in movies. It did it well. Also two great leads.

Real Gritty Funny Touching
The life of a comedian woman. A movie that feels intimate from start to finish, even when the story is running from intimacy. I loved it.

Funny, furious and fearless
I am surprised, and gladly so, to know that films like this, with this kind of confrontational heft, can still get made and distributed by a major these days. This is important stuff, shocking at times, funny and stylish, generally great acting and feels very , very timely.
